In Hapur, India, surgeons have reportedly taken out 29 metal spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two pens from a man’s stomach, which doctors have called one of the most bizarre and surprising medical cases in recent years.
As per a report from the Times of India on September 26, the individual, originally from Bulandshahr, had been admitted to a rehabilitation center in Ghaziabad a month prior but was taken to the hospital following intense stomach pain.
An ultrasound scan reportedly showed several metallic items inside his stomach, leading to an urgent operation conducted by Dr. Shyam Kumar.
The report stated, “The procedure was both intricate and uncommon. An ultrasound detected several metal items within the man’s stomach, forcing physicians to perform surgery without delay.”
The group needed to cautiously take out the objects individually to avoid harm to essential organs.
Dr. Shyam Kumar referred to the event as ‘shocking’ due to the large quantity of objects involved. However, even with the dangers, the procedure turned out to be successful.
The patient is said to have been released and is currently stable and in the process of recovery.
It was reported that he later informed physicians that he had experienced unfair treatment and a lack of proper nutrition at the rehabilitation facility, which made him feel frustrated and powerless.
“He mentioned he had experienced unfair treatment and was denied food at the rehabilitation center, which made him feel angry and powerless. In his distress, he started eating objects to hurt himself, a severe act of self-harm,” the report stated.
The Hindustan Times states that in a comparable incident from 2022, 63 spoons were found in the stomach of a patient from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh.
The individual named Vijay was said to be a person struggling with drug addiction, having spent a year at a rehabilitation center, where he had been consuming spoons.
HT also mentioned in 2019 that a group of physicians in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, removed spoons, screwdrivers, toothbrushes, a kitchen knife, and a door handle from the stomach of a man with a severe mental illness.
