A Chinese technology firm has introduced a disturbing robotic head that features remarkably lifelike facial expressions and motions.

In a disturbing video, the robot’s headless face rests on a workbench while it scans the surroundings, blinks, and opens its mouth.

AheadForm, the organization that created the realistic animatronic, states that its headless robot is intended for ‘research and engagement’.

On social media, technology enthusiasts have been amazed by the robot’s highly lifelike expressions, with one person describing it as an “animated video game character brought to life.”

As stated on AheadForm’s website, the company aims to develop ‘advanced humanoid robot heads capable of displaying emotions, sensing their surroundings, and communicating effortlessly with people.’

The robot, named the AheadForm Origin M1, gains its ability to express emotions through 25 small motors concealed beneath its surface.

These efficient, silent units collaborate to mimic the subtle spasms and motions that give the face a lifelike appearance.

The robot is equipped with small cameras in its eyes, along with concealed microphones and a speaker, enabling it to communicate with individuals in its vicinity.

Even though this robot is merely a face placed on a stand, the brief test video has amazed supporters.

A user commented: “I believed they were incapable of making that skin appear realistic. This is astonishing.”

Another chimed in: ‘The most realistic robot face so far, keep up the book work you will earn big! If I was Musk I would have already bought the company.’

And one commended the design, noting that robotics was now “finally ascending the other side of the uncanny valley.”

In reality, one of the major criticisms was that the robot was so lifelike that individuals found it hard to accept that it was not genuine.

“This appears more like an AI-generated piece than a tangible one,” a user remarked.

Another addition: “The internal components are extremely limited. It might be artificial intelligence.”

And one humorously remarked: “They want me to believe that this is genuine.”

However, not everyone was a huge fan of the hyper-realistic floating woman’s face.

A reader stated: ‘Enhancing a robot’s human-like appearance doesn’t necessarily make it more welcoming. It actually tends to be more unsettling.’

Another joke: “Awesome, human-made horrors beyond my understanding.”

The robot is not currently available for purchase, and AheadForm has not shared any further details regarding the product.

The organization’s declared objective is to develop a ‘head for AI’ enabling advanced language models such as ChatGPT to communicate with individuals in a more realistic manner.

This might be beneficial for uses such as customer support, learning, or medical fields, where individuals are anticipated to engage in longer conversations with automated helpers.

To accomplish this, its robots employ artificial intelligence algorithms to drive a series of motors, enabling the creation of lifelike expressions.

Last year, Yuhang Hu, the founder of AheadForm, along with his team, released a research article in the journal Science Robotics detailing their method.

The scientists explained how they created a robot capable of analyzing, forecasting, and replicating genuine human facial expressions instantly.

Besides this unusual ‘face-only’ model, the company also produces a number of full-sized humanoid robots.

These encompass the peculiar ‘Elf’ line of robots that have pointed ears and can engage with their environment, along with a less sophisticated ‘Lan Series’ designed to be more economical.

Furthermore, the company also produces eerie ‘1-1’ replicas of actual people using the same methods.

The organization states: ‘Our goal is to develop human-like robots that can smoothly blend into everyday situations, offering help, company, and aid in multiple sectors.
