Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, stated that the only requirement for a politician to run in elections or obtain a political position in the nation is a secondary school certificate.

Sani commented on Monday after an investigative report showed that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, rejected the Bachelor of Science degree certificate held by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Uche Nnaji, stating that the politician did not finish his studies at the university and was never given a certificate.

Referring to court papers submitted prior to Justice Hauwa Yilwa at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the report stated that Nnaji also acknowledged that UNN did not provide him with a degree certificate.

It mentioned that the minister filed a legal action against the Minister of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the University of Nigeria, its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Ortuanya, the Registrar, a former Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oguejiofor Ujam, and the university’s Senate.

The court approved three of Nnaji’s requests, such as a directive requiring the university and its administrators to provide his academic transcript, but refused to grant an injunction against the opposing parties.

The matter was, nevertheless, postponed to October 6 for additional proceedings.

Responding to the situation in a post on his X account on Monday, Sani warned those seeking political positions from making untrue statements regarding their educational backgrounds.

He stated, “All that is required to challenge in elections or for political positions is a secondary school diploma. In the world of politics, it’s impossible for someone to assert any unearned credentials without their political rivals investigating the issue. Certain difficulties are unnecessarily brought upon oneself.”
