In a moment that seemed plucked directly from a Hollywood film,The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) conducted a raid on the Sandton residence of tenderpreneur Hangwani Maumela on Thursday., grabbing an astonishing collection of high-end possessions — including three identical blue Lamborghinis.

The raid is part of a broader inquiry into suspected irregular tenders at Tembisa Hospital, where more than R2 billion in public money is said to have been stolen. As per the SIU, the operation is a component of an R820 million effort to recover assets, focusing on individuals believed to have gained from overpriced or fake procurement contracts at the hospital.

In addition to the flashy Lamborghinis, officials seized designer furniture, costly artwork, and other luxury assets from Maumela’s home.

IOL had previously stated that these assets were regarded as part of the illegally obtained profits associated with the Tembisa Hospital scandal.

Despite a serious probe into public corruption, the image of luxury vehicles being towed away brought a brief moment of humor — and generated significant online discussion.

Officials state that the inquiry is still in progress, with the SIU determined to recover additional assets linked to the Tembisa Hospital scandal. In the meantime, pictures of three shiny blue Lamborghinis parked next to each other have left many South Africans puzzled — and amused.

On Thursday, IOL stated thatMaumela and two other entrepreneurs,Vusimuzi Matlala, Rudolph Mazibuko were among the individuals listed by theSIU having gained advantages through several irregular procurement processes at the hospital.

Maumela is the nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa from a prior marriage.

In August, the Assets Forfeiture Unit conducted raids on Maumela and Mazibuko’s properties, which were estimated to be worth around R326 million and R47 million respectively.

The chief accounting officer of the Gauteng Department of Health, Babita Deokaran, was killed on August 23, 2021, following her revelations about corruption at Tembisa Hospital.

Last month, IOL revealed that the SIU has discovered large-scale theft at Tembisa Hospital, after conducting a thorough inquiry into claims of corruption and poor management at the public institution.

The SIU head, Advocate Andy Mothibi, conducted the briefing and presentation of the interim report., accompanied by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, and Gauteng MEC for Health Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.

“Today, through the SIU investigation, we can disclose that evidence has shown several instances of misallocation and other irregularities in public procurement. This can truly be characterized as a severe theft of public funds, which we discovered during our inquiry. The investigation has identified, so far, three organized syndicates accountable for losses exceeding R2 billion,” stated Mothibi.

He mentioned that when the inquiry began, at the request of the Gauteng Premier’s office in 2022, approximately R850 million was thought to have disappeared.

“The enormous amount of money meant for healthcare at Tembisa Hospital, aimed at supporting the most vulnerable, was instead illegally diverted through a complicated network of fraud and corruption, marking a serious violation of public confidence,” said Mothibi.
