Authorities in Nkhata Bay have initiated a search for unidentified people believed to be responsible for igniting fires at the Chombe Rubber Plantation within the region.

The alleged case of arson occurred on October 8, 2025, approximately at 5:30 PM.

As stated by Sergeant Enala Kalua, a Public Relations Officer with Nkhata Bay Police, a security guard and the deputy general manager were performing regular checks when they observed fire coming from a rubber plantation known as section 1987B.

Sergeant Kalua stated that with assistance from other staff members, the two were able to manage and ultimately put out the fire, which had already covered approximately 100 meters before being controlled.

Although they acted quickly, some rubber trees were damaged in the fire, resulting in estimated losses of around K3.5 million.

Police investigators from Nkhata Bay arrived at the location soon after the event to evaluate the level of destruction and gather evidence that could help in determining the perpetrators.

Kalua stated that the inquiry is still in progress and that law enforcement personnel are actively working to identify and capture those responsible for the event.

She also urged members of the public to notify authorities about any unusual behavior or people who might have been spotted near the plantation on the day of the fire.

The Chombe Rubber Plantation plays a significant role in providing jobs and boosting the local economy, with officials worried that ongoing cases of damage or fires might harm output and people’s means of living.

With the police still investigating, the leadership of Chombe Rubber Plantation has promised to enhance security protocols to avoid further incidents and protect the site’s important assets.
