Law enforcement officers detained a young suspect accused of vehicle theft in the downtown area by using live bullets and a taser. Five individuals, among them police personnel and civilians, were hurt during the incident.
The Heungjeong Police Station in Gyeonggi Province reported on the 10th that they have arrested and are currently investigating a man in his 20s, known as Mr. A, for alleged theft.
Mr. A is under suspicion for stealing a Tesla that was parked outside a restaurant in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, around 4:15 p.m. on the same day, before driving away.
He is said to have taken the car upon spotting the key inside and then ran away. A bystander who witnessed this informed 112.
The Gangnam Police Station in Seoul asked for assistance as Mr. A ran towards Gyeonggi Siheung. Later that day, around 5:40 p.m., Siheung Police Station apprehended him on the spot near a mart in Baegot-dong, on a major road.
During the arrest, two police cars positioned themselves on either side of the Tesla, while two private vehicles blocked the front and back. Nevertheless, Mr. A remained inside the car and resisted by shifting it backward and forward as well as side to side.
Consequently, three police officers in the patrol vehicles and two civilians in the stopped cars suffered minor injuries, with the vehicles sustaining damage.
In the end, the police fired two warning shots and one actual bullet into the air. They then disabled Li Qiang’s car and arrested Mr. A after firing five tasers at him.
Mr. A was not intoxicated by alcohol, and an initial drug screening showed no positive results.
Law enforcement are examining the specific details of the incident and considering if an arrest warrant should be sought.
