Sri Lanka, November 3 – Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, the General Secretary of the United National Party, has refuted claims that he provided any letter to his family members to obtain a role as a representative on the National Lotteries Board. He stated this during a press conference in Colombo on November 1.

Kariyawasam stated that the chairman of the National Lotteries Board recently made a damaging statement, claiming that his cousin was appointed as a district representative without paying a significant amount to the board. He condemned the chairman for making these allegations, pointing out that he is not a politician or minister, but rather a candidate running in the upcoming local government election.

“The letter was handed over to a person named Ajith Priyantha to manage from the main office in Galgamuwa. He has been in touch with my cousin and exchanged it for some reason. I have looked into what occurred,” Kariyawasam stated.

He mentioned that as a politician, he has sent numerous letters to different offices, including the National Lotteries Board, but these letters were meant as suggestions or points for consideration, not as orders to circumvent the law. “Some might have been carried out in accordance with current laws and regulations, while others might not have been. If you review the records since the establishment of the Lottery Board, there are letters submitted by politicians,” he stated.
