MTN GHANA’s Bright Conversations initiative organized an expert-level conversation on cybersecurity, highlighting the importance of digital safety and proper use of technology for individuals, companies, and institutions in our current interconnected environment. The gathering promoted the adoption of technology in a secure and responsible manner.
At the event, Jacqueline Hanson Kotei, Senior Manager for Enterprise Information Security and Governance at MTN Ghana, mentioned that as part of their telecommunications initiatives to promote comprehensive internet use, they have introduced various cybersecurity strategies to establish a well-rounded online environment.
She mentioned that they are collaborating with organizations to improve online safety and inform customers about how to safeguard themselves against cyber threats.
Among their customised initiatives are hosting workshops and dialogues to increase understanding of cyber risks, establishing strong security measures to safeguard client information, and encouraging responsible internet behaviour via public education campaigns.
“A few weeks ago, we visited several service centers to talk about cybersecurity with customers and employees. We have been working with our staff on cybersecurity awareness. The risk often originates from inside, making staff education essential,” she stated.
Jacqueline Hanson Kotei emphasized MTN Ghana’s dedication to cybersecurity education and community involvement via programs like Bright Conversations, aimed at equipping users with information and encouraging secure online behavior.
A senior manager at the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Isaac Socrates Mensah, stated that the majority of cyber incidents in the nation are now not just technical issues but are increasingly based on social engineering, taking advantage of human trust instead of vulnerabilities in systems.
“Many individuals believe cybersecurity is solely related to systems and software. However, the problem frequently starts with human actions. People are tricked into sharing personal information or clicking on harmful links. Since January, we have dealt with almost 300 cases connected to online crime,” he mentioned.
Mr. Mensah also stated that the nation is implementing decisive measures to enhance its digital identification system and combat fraud associated with SIM cards. He revealed intentions for a new SIM re-registration process to address previous verification issues and ensure user information matches national digital ID systems.
From his perspective, Seth Gyapong-Oware, Senior Manager Legal and Compliance at CSA, emphasized the need for robust cross-sector cooperation to address cybercrime and encourage digital security across all societal levels.
He pointed out that Ghana’s national cybersecurity strategy, headed by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, focuses on policy changes, global collaboration, and training programs to protect the nation’s digital systems.
