A video circulating online depicts a lion having difficulty standing and moving at Stedmak Gardens in Karen, leading the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to release a statement regarding the animal’s condition.

In a statement released on Friday evening, the organizationassured the public that the lion, called Lamu, is receiving active veterinary treatment and is not experiencing neglect, as previously worried.

The video, extensively circulated on social media this week, has prompted worries from online users who wondered if the creature was underfed or being treated inadequately.

In the statement, KWS mentioned that Lamu is 22 years old, an uncommon age for a lion.

Most wild lions survive for 12 to 16 years, according to KWS, whereas those in captivity seldom make it to their early 20s.

The organization stated that the lion has been undergoing continuous care for a condition that has impacted his movement since 2020.

“The team assessed Lamu this afternoon and verified that he is still receiving treatment for progressive spinal nerve degeneration, a condition he has been managing since 2020,” KWS stated.

The situation, KWS mentioned, is similar to age-related spinal issues in humans, which can impact balance and physical strength.

Veterinary staff have been performing regular evaluations and providing treatment to assist the lion in preserving muscle function and movement.

“Similar to humans who are regaining mobility after spinal injuries, Lamu goes on slow walks as part of his treatment and recovery process,” the statement said.

Lamu was first taken in from an orphanage in 2012 and has since been under regular observation and receiving specialized veterinary treatment.

As per KWS, the lion’s longer life span is due to years of ongoing observation, tailored diet, and frequent veterinary care focused on enhancing his well-being and standard of living as he grows older.

The veterinary team also examined other animals living at Stedmak Gardens and determined they were in good health.

The trending video has generated intense public responses, with numerous Kenyans showing compassion for the lion and demanding inquiries into his well-being.

Certain social media users stated the animal looked undernourished or had been abused, prompting KWS to quickly address the worries.

KWS reasserted its dedication to maintaining excellent levels of animal welfare and conservation, highlighting that managing aging animals in captivity demands thoughtful approach, time, and expert attention.

The organization stated it will keep a close watch on Lamu and regularly assess his treatment requirements to guarantee his well-being remains secure as his health changes.

“KWS, along with its partners, continues to be dedicated to maintaining the highest levels of animal welfare in its effort to conserve and safeguard Kenya’s wildlife,” the statement ended.
