A MelbourneA mother of two had the police called on her by her dentist after she informed him that she did not want him to use artificial intelligence during her dental visit.

Caerwin Martin, 52, was receiving treatment for a toothache when the routine examination turned into a turmoil after the periodontist requested her permission to use anAI program to take notes.

Feeling uncomfortable with her personal medical details being posted online, and worried about the security of the software, Ms. Martin declined, leading to the dentist’s unusual response.

I’m just so stunned,” she said to the Daily Mail. “It was the most strange scenario. I ended up calling the police for refusing to use AI to take my notes.

The law enforcement officer found it amusing. He approached and asked, “What’s happening?”

This was a level-zero call – an emergency – and here I was, calmly waiting in the reception area.

The police were contacted last week as Ms. Martin went to a specialist appointment with a periodontist she had been referred to due to persistent pain.

“He mentioned he was using AI to take notes and draft referrals, and I responded that no, I’m a musician and I’m stepping away from AI,” she said.

He somewhat stopped moving and glanced at his assistant, then became very restless.

I opened my mouth and he examined it for approximately 30 seconds before stating that I required a referral, and that was all.

He appeared irritated and was very restless, occasionally tapping his leg in frustration.

As the physician prepared to draft the referral, Ms. Martin, a musician, mentioned that the subject was brought up once more.

“I informed him that I didn’t believe it was safe and I had security issues with it, and he claimed that was legally incorrect and he couldn’t let me make statements that were legally false,” she stated.

It was quite strange and I don’t really grasp what he meant, but that’s what he said, and then he completely broke down.

He claimed they weren’t utilizing ChatGPT and refused to provide me with any additional information, which led to a significant escalation in tension.

Ms. Martin states that she informed the physician that he needed to control himself and inquired if he wanted her to depart.

I left the appointment and went to the reception to make the payment, and he followed me into the waiting room, shouting ‘call the police’.

The secretary, who appeared somewhat confused, contacted the authorities and dialed 000.

Ms. Martin states that she stayed in the waiting area until the officers arrived, and after having a short conversation with them, she departed and has not received any further communication since.

Feeling anxious about the conflict, she subsequently reached out to the Dental Board of Australia for guidance.

“They were incredible. They told me I definitely had the right to make the choice and that what occurred shouldn’t have taken place,” she stated.

And what I believe this brings up is a discussion about the application of AI in the medical profession.

I’m aware that people are frequently questioned by GPs about their use of AI, whether they have your approval and permission, and naturally, you should have the right to refuse.

I have numerous ethical concerns regarding why I don’t want AI to access my medical information.

I’m a musician and I’m upset that the government had to intervene to prevent AI from taking everything from us.

So, I’m already boycotting AI and I don’t believe AI is beneficial for the world.

Last month, the Australian government prohibited artificial intelligence firms from using Australian creative content to train their models.

The action might have involved local artists’ creations being replicated and utilized without any royalty payments.

“I also don’t want my health information to be documented by anyone besides the healthcare provider,” Ms. Martin added.

I am deeply worried about potential leaks in ChatGPT. I don’t believe it is secure and I have no trust in it.

I realize that doctors might want to use it if they’re short on time, and there could be a discussion about reducing expenses, but we all deserve the right to refuse, thank you very much.
