The government of Oyo State announced on Monday its intention to launch a new digital system for the approval of construction and survey plans.

The official in charge of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Williams Akin-Funmilayo, disclosed this during a gathering with all regional directors of town planning departments in the state, which took place in the Ministry Conference Room.

Akin-Funmilayo, according to a statement from the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, in Ibadan, the state capital, mentioned that the new digital system represents progress in urban management and infrastructure regulation.

He stated that the new system would prevent all types of leaks and irregularities that manual processes had previously permitted, adding that the digital building permit approval system will offer greater transparency and accountability.

The commissioner stated, “The new plan approval system would eliminate the conventional method of operation; it is entirely automated and includes security measures, such as a barcode that creates and verifies each approved document.”

The era of inefficiency and compromise among the town planning officials has ended. The current administration will no longer accept excuses but will demand tangible results that demonstrate the government’s commitment to modernization.

As a result, he instructed the task forces and enforcement units within Physical Planning to enhance their surveillance activities and take action against any developers or individuals breaching planning rules.

Akin-Funmilayo emphasized that the current government is committed to safeguarding people’s lives and assets by ensuring adherence to zoning regulations and authorized building codes.

He also pledged to all residents of the state that the new digital platform will enable them to submit and handle construction permits from any location globally, reducing time consumption and eliminating the necessity for middlemen or under-the-table arrangements.

The commissioner called on all property owners to back the State Government by following this new initiative closely, promising that it will be easy to use and free from corruption.

In 2024, the state administration launched a 60-day digital building permit amnesty initiative, designed to legalise structures built without appropriate official permission.

Akin-Funmilayo stated that the initiative would address breaches of construction rules in the state, while also handling new permits within the 60-day period.
