Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian basketball champions, Dar City, left the country yesterday heading to Nairobi, Kenya, in preparation for the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Top 16, which will begin tomorrow at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.
Tanzania’s team is listed in Group B with Malawi’s Bravehearts BC, Zambia’s Matero Magic, and Mozambique’s Ferroviario Da Beira.
In the meantime, Group A includes Nairobi City Thunder, Johannesburg Giants, and Uganda’s Namuwongo Blazers.
The much-anticipated competition is set to end on November 23.
The head coach of Dar City, Mohamed Mbwana, stated that the team’s traveling group includes 15 players, four coaches, a team manager, and a medical officer.
Nevertheless, only 12 athletes will be allowed to participate in the competition, according to BAL rules.
“We have put in a lot of effort before the competition. We were undergoing residential training in Zanzibar, and my players are in great mood and prepared to give their top performance,” said Mbwana.
The Tanzanian champions secured their place in the Top 16 following a strong performance in the Road to BAL tournament conducted at the International School of Tanganyika (IST) in Dar es Salaam.
Dar City secured first place in their group with two strong wins, proving they are a significant contender on the continental stage.
In their first match of the qualification round, Dar City delivered a strong showing, beating Djabal Basket Iconi from Comoros with a score of 102–50.
The group’s seamless collaboration, strategic control, and precise striking delighted regional supporters, who filled the seats to support them.
In the second game, Dar City continued their strong performance, defeating Uganda’s Namuwongo Blazers 83–70 to secure their spot in the BAL Top 16.
The findings emphasized the team’s reliability and ability to compete against top clubs throughout Africa.
Equipped with a strong base of preparation and self-assurance following their Road to BAL victory, Dar City is set to leave a powerful mark in Nairobi.
Supporters will be closely observing whether the Tanzanian champions can convert their local achievements into a strong showing on the continental stage.
