In celebration of the International Day for Tolerance, FIFA has reasserted its dedication to fostering respect and inclusivity by emphasizing that hatred and discrimination have no role in the world of football.

As part of its initiatives in this field, FIFA has upgraded its Social Media Protection Service (SMPS), which is accessible to all players, teams, and officials participating in FIFA tournaments, as well as to FIFA Member Associations (MAs), throughout the entire year.

Following the introduction of the SMPS in 2022, more than 65,000 harmful posts have been submitted to social media platforms for examination and deletion, with over 30,000 reported since the beginning of this year.

Starting from the beginning of this year, 11 people have been reported to international law enforcement agencies in Argentina, Brazil, France, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States after experiencing misconduct during FIFA events. One case has been forwarded to Interpol. The appropriate FIFA member associations have been notified about these incidents to allow them to implement any required measures locally.

Furthermore, for every confirmed instance, FIFA is banning people who have engaged in extremely harsh conduct, with the goal of stopping them from buying tickets to any upcoming FIFA competitions or events.

The SMPS has been utilized in several competitions this year, including the first-ever FIFA Club World Cup™, where the service ensured that all 32 teams, representing players from 72 different nationalities, involved in the major event held in the United States were safeguarded through active monitoring that identified and reported any violent, threatening, or discriminatory content. Throughout the tournament, SMPS monitored 2,401 active accounts across five social media platforms, covering players, coaches, teams, and match officials participating in this historic event, analyzing 5.9 million posts, flagging 179,517 for review, and reporting 20,587 to the appropriate platforms.

“On the International Day for Tolerance, I want to emphasize clearly that football should be a secure and welcoming environment – on the field, in the audience, and in the digital space. With the FIFA Social Media Protection Service and by utilizing cutting-edge technology along with professional knowledge, FIFA is implementing strong measures to safeguard players, coaches, teams, and match officials from the significant damage caused by online harassment,” stated FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Our statement is straightforward: mistreatment has no role in our sport, and we remain committed to collaborating with our Member Associations, the federations, and police departments to ensure those who break the rules are held responsible.

This conduct is unacceptable in football or in society, and FIFA is making every effort by reporting such incidents and also banning individuals from buying tickets for FIFA events.

The FIFA SMPS aims to safeguard people from internet harassment, especially racist, prejudicial, or menacing communications that could occur throughout significant tournaments.

It also prevents account holders’ followers from encountering harmful, prejudiced, and menacing content, thus stopping the acceptance of such behaviors as routine.
