The Springboks have bolstered their traveling team with the addition of seasoned hooker Bongi Mbonambi and strong prop Ntuthuko Mchunu, who will meet the squad in Ireland on Sunday. These selections occur as head coach Rassie Erasmus gets ready for the last two games of the Castle Lager Outgoing Tour, facing Ireland and Wales.
Mbonambi, who was included in the latest Castle Lager Rugby Championship squad, was named as one of Erasmus’s backup players for the tour. Mchunu, on the other hand, last played for the Boks during the 2024 Castle Lager Incoming Series, securing his third Test appearance in Bloemfontein against Portugal.
Erasmus mentioned that the timing was tactically advantageous, given the two intense confrontations that lay ahead.
“This tour is longer than usual, and we have two major games scheduled against Ireland and Wales, which led to the decision to include Bongi and Ntuthuko,” he explained. Both athletes have performed well for us on the global level, so we are thrilled to have them in the team.
Several players will not be eligible to be chosen for the final Test during the tour against Wales, since the game is not within the international window. Therefore, it is logical to bring in these players now to rejoin training this week and regain their rhythm with the team, while also boosting the squad’s depth for our upcoming match against Ireland.
The Springboks will depart from Italy to Dublin on Sunday afternoon, then concentrate entirely on preparing for the much-anticipated match against Ireland, with training on the field scheduled to start on Monday.
