The Mozambican National Energy Transport Company (STE) has already invested 58.6 million US dollars in relocating and compensating families and public facilities impacted by the construction of the Temane-Maputo Power Transmission Line.
The Temane-Maputo Power Transmission Line spans 563 km and will carry electricity from the Temane Thermal Power Plant, located in the southern province of Inhambane, to Maputo. The initiative was part of the Tete-Maputo large-scale project, which is considered the “Backbone” of the nation’s electrification efforts.
A 400 kilovolt (kV) line involves the building of three new substations in Vilankulo, Chibuto, and Matalane, intended to enhance the stability and power of the nation’s electrical network and support economic growth.
The state-owned energy transportation company (STE) is controlled by the publicly traded electricity provider, EDM.
As per STE data, referenced by the independent publication “Carta de Moçambique,” the project impacted 219 homes; four in Inhambane, 67 in Gaza, and 147 in Maputo. Additionally, it affected two hospitals, three schools, a police station, and three water sources.
“STE allocated USD 25.7 million for relocating homes and social facilities. Alongside the relocation, STE disbursed slightly more than USD 21 million in financial compensation because the power line impacted 2,736 farms (1,275 in Maputo, 1,335 in Gaza, and 125 in Inhambane), as well as 12 commercial businesses. The compensation covered incomplete houses, land plots, fruit trees, and other properties,” states the report.
As part of its community support initiative, STE allocated USD 4.6 million to construct 88 classrooms (46 located in Maputo, 34 in Gaza, and eight in Inhambane), 18 water supply points, a community center, a maternity unit, a maternity residence, and a hospital entrance.
STE invested seven million dollars in consulting services to support the execution of these social initiatives. The services involve creating urban development strategies, overseeing construction, and developing plans for restoring livelihoods.
