A fire near the Liberian Pavilion at the COP30 climate conference in Brazil led to a brief period of concern on Thursday, with delegates required to leave part of the venue as emergency crews worked to control the flames.
A source present at the conference verified the incident and explained that the fire started a short distance from the Liberian section of the exhibition area while delegates were preparing for a UN Women side event.
The source mentioned that the cause of the fire is still unknown but suggested that electrical issues could be a contributing factor. The Liberian Pavilion had reportedly experienced electrical problems since the start of the conference because of a discrepancy between the 220-volt wiring in the pavilion and the 110-volt system used throughout the rest of the facility, as stated by the source.
As per the report, multiple devices introduced by the Liberian team had failed earlier in the week following their connection, leading them to acquire step-down equipment to handle the voltage discrepancy. While arrangements for the side event were being made, delegates were asked to step back to let the program start, but sudden fire alarms caused attendees to quickly evacuate the area.
Firefighters reached the scene in a short time and tried to put out the fire, finally managing to get the situation under control. The source mentioned that they were helping to confirm the presence of every member of the Liberian delegation and emphasized that there were no reports of any injuries.
The source mentioned that the process of confirming the safety of all Liberian participants is still in progress, but early signs indicate that everyone is secure.
The event took place while thousands of delegates from across the globe keep arriving in Brazil for COP30, the yearly United Nations climate conference that brings together government officials, climate researchers, environmental associations, and community groups.
Liberia is one of the countries taking part in discussions focused on improving worldwide efforts to address climate change, developing plans to cut emissions, and providing better assistance to nations that are increasingly affected by its consequences.
The event offers a venue for nations to assess advancements within the Paris Agreement, exchange new climate targets, and establish collaborations aimed at advancing worldwide initiatives for a greener tomorrow.
