Harare’s Mayor, Jacob Mafume, has urged citizens to pay close attention to weather reports and utilize mobile notifications to prevent being caught in sudden floods as the city intensifies its work to clear obstructed drainage systems before the height of the rainy season.
During the 1,941st regular council meeting, Mafume stated that the local authority is focusing on maintaining storm drains to minimize disruptions during the rainy season.
“We wish to inform the residents that we are addressing the drainage system, and we anticipate the Director of Works to step up the initiative to prevent people from facing avoidable difficulties,” he stated.
Mafume encouraged locals to review weather predictions prior to departing their homes, noting that enhanced technology now offers precise notifications about the timing of rainfall.
“Tracking weather trends enables individuals to decide when to evacuate the area and when to come back, ensuring they steer clear of flood situations,” he added.
The mayor also urged informal vendors to cease positioning items and temporary constructions within storm drains, cautioning that this behavior was increasing clogs.
“Each day, we are clearing out tables and other objects from the drains, some of which might have hardened due to moisture. The vendors should cease using drains as storage space,” he stated.
Mafume additionally cautioned that people who constructed houses without adequate drainage systems, typically in informal settlements, were at risk of experiencing flooding when heavy rains occurred.
He mentioned that the council would keep increasing its efforts in the next few weeks to clear blocked drains and reduce flood-related interruptions throughout the city.
