Dhaka, November 26 – Bangladesh’s captain Litton Das shared an unexpected statement on Tuesday, voicing his dissatisfaction with the selection procedures for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland.
The conflict came to light when Litton was questioned about Shamim Hossain’s omission from the team.
Shamim, who scored 0, 1, and 1 in his past three T20 matches, was omitted without prior conversation with the captain—something Litton mentioned surprised him.
Of course, it would have been nice if he was part of the team,” Litton stated. “But this decision wasn’t mine. The selectors left him out without letting me know – without any prior warning.
Litton took it a step further, challenging the fundamental process used for selection.
Throughout my life, I thought captains were aware of who was arriving and who was leaving,” he stated. “But it seems that’s no longer true.
His irritation increased as the discussion turned to the revamped middle order, now consisting of five right-handed hitters — Mahidul Islam taking Shamim’s place, along with Saif Hassan, Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali, and Nurul Hasan.
That’s a valid observation,” Litton said to a journalist. “If this concept originated from higher up rather than from you, it would be beneficial. At the global level, maintaining a balance between different approaches is essential.
Litton mentioned he was directly informed that he would not have any influence over the selection process.
I’ve been informed by the board and selectors that I need to work with whichever team I’m assigned. I won’t get to choose who is included or excluded.
The leader also conveyed sorrow for not being able to assist Shamim during a difficult period.
Not every individual will participate in each series. Shamim delivered exceptional cricket for us previously. As a captain, I should have been able to provide him with the necessary support. I deeply regret that I wasn’t able to do so.
When asked if he had expressed worries to the board, Litton did not hold back.
A gap has emerged, indeed. I have been explicitly informed: my role is to lead the team I have and achieve outcomes.
Regarding whether he would remain as captain under these circumstances, Litton provided a short reply: “We’ll see.”
The first T20I between Bangladesh and Ireland will take place in Chittagong tomorrow.
