The swimming pool at Alra Park is also not functioning.

In 2014, the sports complex and stadium located at Alra Park, close to Nigel, became unprotected. Initially in bad condition, it suffered significant damage due to vandalism. It was shut down in 2018, as reported by local community members.

In 2019, the Ekurhuleni municipality allocated R11.5-million and pledged to restore the stadium within eight months.

The initiative was halted due to the Covid pandemic. However, once operations resumed, there were additional delays and problems with different contractors.

As stated by sports facilitator Hugh van Greenen, “Up to R12.4-million has been spent, but with very little to show.”

He mentioned that the community has over 18 senior and 16 junior soccer teams, which currently face difficulties in training or organizing competitions. They have temporary access to Mackenzieville Stadium, but it is not enough.

Deacon Mthimkhulu, a 23-year-old athlete with the Alra Park football club, mentioned that the team members have felt discouraged.

A municipal representative, Zweli Dlamini, stated that the renovation project involves constructing a new pavilion, restroom and storage areas, visible fencing, floodlights, a gatehouse, and a parking lot. However, the sports field, grass surface, and irrigation-related tasks will need to secure extra financial support.

At present, the roofing sheets and electrical work remain incomplete.

“The present stage is anticipated to conclude by the end of December 2025. After this stage is finalized, the completed facility will be available for use. Nevertheless, phase 2, which involves the creation of the sports field and other remaining elements, will still need additional funding,” Dlamini stated.

Swimming pool closed

Residents shared with GroundUp that issues at the Alra Park swimming pool, situated close to the stadium, began approximately five years ago after the circulation pump malfunctioned. It remains non-functional. The only other pool is located in Nigel town and is also closed. As a result, children are now swimming in nearby dams, often without their parents’ awareness.

Resident Janison Trevor Muller mentioned that each year they are informed that funds have been set aside for the pool, but no action is taken.

The lawn surrounding the pool has remained uncut for several months, and the water in both the infant and primary pools is still and green.

Dlamini verified that the pump had malfunctioned. He stated, “The City has been investigating every potential remedy, including efforts to reuse existing machinery.”

“The municipality will share updates once additional details are available,” he stated.
