Yuki Tsunodahas been experiencing a challenging Formula 1 season with Red Bull, making his Las Vegas incident even harder to swallow.
Tsunoda is 24-0 in the leadMax Verstappenin their qualifying face-off, but was notably 3.340s behind his teammate in the wet Nevada session.
It emerged that Red Bull had incorrect tyre pressures configuredon its second vehicle, team principal Laurent Mekies admitted to “significant errors” after the qualifying session.
By the conclusion of the race on Saturday evening, Tsunoda appeared still uninformed about how the mistake occurred, and was seeking explanations.
I want to find out,” said the Red Bull driver. “I want to know why this issue… it was very simple. It went completely out of control. It’s not about being small or anything. There’s very little chance of being competitive in that situation.
Additionally, I believe it was preventable. We were unable to prevent or at least enhance things during the session. This is something we need to examine. We essentially wasted it.
Tsunoda’s poor qualifying performance resulted in a pointsless race, marking another setback in his ongoing struggle to retain his position at Red Bull.Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar expected to be promoted.
The Japanese driver is ranked 17th in the standings, having accumulated 28 points compared to Verstappen’s 366, yet he took comfort in his performance during practice in Las Vegas.
“At least I have demonstrated repeatedly throughout the qualifying sessions — from FP1 to FP3, in every practice run, I was competing very intensely against Max and often ahead of him,” he stated.
It was something they couldn’t see and I also didn’t have for a long time. It’s something I should view in a positive light. My speed was remarkable there. I mean, the amazing aspect of Max is that he elevates the qualifying session to a new level.
But also, I felt confident, even more than at any grand prix. Yeah, it’s a real shame. But the good news is that our pace is improving. So, it’s about maintaining that in Qatar.
