WilliamsThe head of Formula 1, James Vowles, is set to make a comeback in endurance racing as he participates in the 2025 Gulf 12 Hours with Garage 59 on December 14.
A 46-year-old driver last competed in 2022, participating in all four events of the Asian Le Mans Series with the Garage 59 team, driving itsMcLaren 720S GT3.
Vowles will compete in the Evo version of that McLaren in December at Yas Marina Circuit, which takes place just a week after the 2025 F1 season concludes at the same Abu Dhabi location.
He will share the track with Alexander West, the 2024 Pro-Am victor, Marco Pulcini, a two-time International GT Open Pro-Am champion, and Mark Sansom, the 2025 Am second-place finisher.
Vowles stated, “The opportunity to wear a racing helmet once more is something I look forward to. Garage 59 is a team I am familiar with from our collaboration in 2022.”
The Gulf 12 Hours is an amazing event featuring a strong field of competitors. It will be a joy to share the car with Alex, Mark, and Marco, and to feel the thrill of racing from the driver’s seat once more.
Vowles joined Williams in 2023, indicating he was still serving as the strategy director ofMercedeswhen he participated in the Asian Le Mans Series, earning two points over the events in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
This complemented the saloon racing he participated in the United Kingdom in 2015, along with show runs at events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed – this year, he tried the hillclimb in the 1992 F1 world-championship-winning Williams.
The team principal of Garage 59, Andrew Kirkaldy, stated: “We had a great time collaborating with James throughout the 2022 ALMS season.”
His methodology and dedication, along with his expertise in strategy, made the partnership a pleasant experience.
Having him return for the Gulf 12 Hours is something we’re all thrilled about, and we can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together in Abu Dhabi.
Garage 59 was established in 2016 and has participated in numerous competitions including the GT World Challenge Europe, Intercontinental GT Challenge, ALMS, and British GT.
It focuses on operating McLaren,Ferrarior Aston Martin GT vehicles, and for 2026 it is planned to participate in the GT World Challenge and the World Endurance Championship.
