The U.S. Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Information Technologies, Ângelo Buta João, this week in Baku (Azerbaijan), highlighted the progress the nation has made in the areas of regulation, development, and enhancement of connectivity infrastructure and digital inclusion in recent years.
During a high-level panel discussion at the World Conference on Telecommunications Development, held from the 17th to the 28th of this month, the leader also emphasized staff training, modernization of public administration services, and strengthening cybersecurity.
He remembered that this advancement has allowed for the growth and updating of the support systems in its land-based, underwater, and space elements.
Angelo Buta João stated that Angola now features a network spanning over 30,000 kilometers of land-based fiber, with an additional 4,860 kilometers being repaired and 1,400 new ones currently under construction, as part of the national broadband network initiative.
Furthermore, he emphasized the “Conecta Angola” initiative, which provided internet and telecommunication services to 27 areas, benefiting nearly 366,000 people so far.
Angelo Buta Joao reiterated the ongoing efforts of the Angolan Executive to increase the reach of Digital Terrestrial Television, enhance the National Cybersecurity System, and establish the Angolan National Cloud infrastructure.
He stated that this approach will enable the connection of various ministries to the central Data Center and ensure enhanced protection of citizens’ data along with the reliability of electronic services.
He used the opportunity to invite ministers, high-ranking officials from various organizations, and other delegates to the event to attend the Angolan International Information and Communication Technology Forum (ANGOTIC), which will take place on June 11th, 12th, and 13th, 2026.
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) organizes the World Conference on Telecommunications Development once every four years.
The gathering united leaders and policymakers from 193 ITU member countries, including Angola, along with delegates from the private sector, educational institutions, and other pertinent stakeholders recognized by the organization.
