The authorities in Nampula, a northern province, have provided two drones to the Mozambican Defense and Security Forces (FDS) to enhance monitoring of the territory in the ongoing effort to combat Islamist militants.

The final assault on Nampula province occurred over the weekend of November 15-16, when militants attacked the Mazua administrative post in Memba district, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.

Earlier, the militants carried out assaults on 30 September and 3 October, during which they attacked the Lúrio and Chipene administrative posts.

Since 2017, there have been violent extremist attacks occurring in the nearby province of Cabo Delgado, resulting in at least 4,500 deaths and more than one million people being displaced. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been cautioning that the violence is likely to spread to other areas, particularly in Nampula.

The unmanned aerial vehicles arrived at the Samora Machel Military Academy on Thursday, brought by the Nampula province governor, Eduardo Abdula.

As stated by the governor, in an environment where dangers are changing quickly, gathering data in real-time is essential to enable thorough analysis and support informed decision-making.

“Modern challenges demand that information be delivered swiftly, precisely, and safely, and technology provides us with this opportunity. Drones serve as tools that enhance our surveillance capabilities and enable more efficient responses. The capacity to evaluate situations with higher confidence is crucial for safeguarding the nation,” he stated.

Abdula is of the opinion that drones will also enhance the operational effectiveness of the Mozambican military, improving the pace of operations and response capabilities. They will also enhance the technical education of upcoming officers.

“Using these drones, we are enhancing the training aspect and making sure our military staff stay updated with technological developments and present requirements,” stated Abdula.

From his perspective, Francisco Matarruca, the head of the Academy, stated that this equipment represents “generosity and patriotism.” He assured that the use of drones will be guided by professionalism and a sense of purpose. “These tools will aid in enhancing ground surveillance,” the commander mentioned.

Matarruca also stated that the militants who targeted Memba district are leaving the area because of pressure from the Defense and Security Forces. “There are injured individuals being evacuated. They crossed over a few days ago. We will keep searching and continue the operation,” he vowed.

These are the initial two drones, among a total of 10 pledged by the Nampula provincial government.
