Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, announced a “code red” — an emergency situation — and directed the company to concentrate its efforts on enhancing ChatGPT. This indicates a feeling of urgency, as OpenAI might be at risk of losing its position as a leader in the AI field because of recent progress made by rivals like Google.
A U.S.-based technology news platform named The Information stated that Altman shared an internal message on the 1st (local time), saying, “ChatGPT has arrived at a highly critical stage,” and underlined the importance of directing all resources toward its enhancement. Consequently, several of OpenAI’s other active projects will be delayed. Prominent examples are AI assistants that handle shopping and health tasks, advertising initiatives, and “Pulse,” which creates tailored reports.
The reason behind OpenAI’s emergency declaration is linked to Google’s expansion. Google’s “Gemini 3,” launched last month, has outperformed GPT-5 in critical benchmarks (performance assessments) and received positive feedback from users in areas like image creation. Google reported that Gemini’s monthly active users increased from 450 million in July of the previous year to 650 million in October. While this number is still lower than ChatGPT’s 800 million users, the rate of growth is significant. Earlier, Altman shared an internal memo stating, “Google’s Gemini 3 could pose economic challenges for our company in the near future.”
Altman revealed plans to introduce a new reasoning model that outperformed Gemini 3 in internal tests, set to be announced next week. Nevertheless, he highlighted the need for further work to enhance the ChatGPT experience. The Information noted, “This contrasts with the scenario three years ago when Google sounded an alarm due to the challenge posed by ChatGPT.”
Nick Tuly, the leader of ChatGPT at OpenAI, mentioned on X on the same day, “ChatGPT makes up 70% of worldwide AI-supported tasks and 10% of search activities,” and noted, “Our present objective is to improve ChatGPT’s features, maintain its ongoing development, and increase its availability across the globe.”
