On the 3rd, commemorating the first anniversary of the December 3rd Emergency Martial Law, numerous events titled “Light of Democracy, Unfading Memory” took place across the National Assembly.

The National Assembly placed the text of Article 1, Clause 2 of the Constitution—“All power originates with the people”—above the main entrance on the second floor of its primary structure.

At the inscription unveiling event at 4 p.m., Speaker Woo Won-shik said, “The history of the Republic of Korea has demonstrated that ‘all power comes from the people,’” and added, “Today’s inscription is the National Assembly’s tribute to the sovereign people, the protectors of constitutional governance, and the true owners of all accomplishments achieved by the Republic of Korea.” Kim Byung-kee, the floor leader of the Democratic Party, noted, “The phrase engraved today in the main hall of the National Assembly represents the identity of the Republic of Korea and the reason the National Assembly was established.”

A photographic display named “December 3rd Night at the National Assembly: 2 Hours and 30 Minutes” took place in the main lawn area. More than 90 images documented the intense events of that day, including the announcement of emergency martial law, the arrival of military forces at the National Assembly, and the approval of a resolution calling for the removal of martial law.

A prominent photographic area inspired by the National Assembly’s gavel was also established on the lawn during the time the resolution to end emergency martial law was passed.

From the 3rd to the 5th, six “dark tourism” events are scheduled. Visitors will tour, led by guides, the National Assembly’s playground where military helicopters touched down during the emergency martial law, the location where Speaker Woo climbed the National Assembly’s wall, and the second-floor entrance of the National Assembly Building where staff had fierce confrontations with martial law enforcers. Speaker Woo will act as a guide for the first tour starting at 5 p.m. on the 3rd.

At 7 p.m., a public demonstration named “December 3rd Uprising·Foreign Exchange Settlement and Cessation, Major Social Changes” will take place in front of the National Assembly. Furthermore, at 9 p.m., a media wall event will display memories from the martial law period on the main building of the National Assembly.
