Pete Hegsethput soldiers’ lives at risk by disclosing confidential military strategies on Signal earlier this year, aclassified report from the Inspector General has been made public.
The disclosed documents outlined U.S. military actions aimed at Houthi fighters in Yemen, implicating Hegseth, as stated by four individuals who have reviewed the report’s details,CNN reports.
Steven Stebbins, the acting Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Defense, mentioned in his report that the defense secretary has the power to release classified information, according to Hegseth, who stated he provided the details as an on-the-spot operational choice.
The PentagonThe lead declined to participate in an interview with the Inspector General, opting instead to provide a written response to the report, according to a source close to Hegseth who spoke to the Daily Mail.
According to sources, the report indicates that Hegseth was incorrect in using the messaging application, and senior officials within the Defense Department require improved instruction on established procedures.
A legal source affiliated with Hegseth informed the Daily Mail that Hegseth removed the classification from the information, despite there being no written or recorded verbal evidence of him doing so.
The source claims that as the original classification authority, Hegseth has the right to unclassify something –– ‘even if it’s not a wise choice.’
“The only exception would be if he disclosed something to the CIA. However, it is evident that this did not occur here – all were operational DOD plans, not CIA-related,” a legal source acquainted with the procedure mentioned to Daily Mail.
Nevertheless, the real-time military strategies were extremely detailed, with one message shared in the chat specifying a time, stating, “This is when the first bomb will be dropped.”
This new report is released as the Pentagon experiences growing scrutiny regarding the allegedwar crimesallegation as reports surfaced that Hegseth authorized a second attack on a Venezuelan vessel which resulted in the deaths of two individuals.

The Pentagon and the White House dismissed the report, asserting that Adm. Frank Bradley, not Hegseth, was responsible for authorizing the second strike that targeted the survivors of the initial attack.
The unclassified version of the IG report is expected to be released on Thursday for public access.
The confidential document was delivered to Congress on Tuesday.
The Pentagon did not provide a statement in response to the inquiry.
