Disputes hinder progress, and this is clear in areas that have sadly faced internal conflict.

Currently, Yendi, which was previously a region affected by conflict, has emerged from its challenges and is experiencing swift infrastructure growth as a result of the restoration of peace after Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s intervention at the request of the former President Akufo-Addo.

Paved roads, roundabouts, and traffic signals, along with a thriving construction sector, have allowed locals to benefit from the rewards of peace, which they were previously deprived of due to prolonged, preventable civil unrest.

It is this characteristic of Yendi currently that we aim to duplicate in Bawku, within the Upper East Region.

Before the outbreak of inter-ethnic conflicts in the municipality and surrounding areas, Bawku served as a significant trading hub with direct road connections to Burkina Faso, Togo, and Niger. Merchants from these countries capitalized on Bawku’s strategic location to conduct active trade, contributing to the area’s economic growth. This situation was disrupted by the violent clashes that subsequently became a defining characteristic of Bawku.

The insight of involving Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in the manner he acted in Dagbon was repeated by President John Mahama when he sought the King’s assistance.

Following a lengthy trip, the conclusion has been achieved, and the Asante King, who clearly utilized the time-honored conventional method for resolving disputes, has finished the task.

As he gets ready to present his report and suggestions to the President, our enthusiasm is boundless, particularly because the two groups showed their wish for a return to normal conditions when they met in Manhyia. It is encouraging and comforting that both factions were properly represented during the meeting with the King.

We hope and pray that once the final decision is made, the long-standing, loveless relationship that has troubled Bawku for so long will be buried forever.

We urge the leaders of the two groups to genuinely strive for their people to embrace the decision that will come from the thorough mediation process, and to collaborate in strengthening the emerging peace that will soon surround Bawku.

There is inevitably an end to conflict; for us, this is what is becoming visible on the horizon, particularly if all opposing groups choose to give peace a greater opportunity to take root.

Individuals who benefit from these disruptions should release their grip on Bawku; the town’s residents have experienced hardship for far too long.

The young people from both conflicting groups have an important part to play in bringing back peace. Let us urge them to heed the advice of the older generation by abandoning violence.
