The role of Moroccan soldiers in the freeing of France during both World Wars was the main topic of a meeting that took place on Wednesday night at the National Assembly in Paris.
Centered around the theme «The role of the Kingdom of Morocco in the liberation of France and Europe during the two World Wars (1914–1918 and 1939–1945), and the position of Moroccan combatants», the event emphasized the courage and sacrifices of Moroccan soldiers who contributed to protecting France’s freedom, leaving a lasting impact on history through their valiant actions.
In a message to MAP, Naïma Moghir, head of the International Ambassador Association and organizer of the conference in collaboration with the Forum of Parallel Diplomacy, emphasized that the purpose is to bring to mind the history of the French-Moroccan community, especially for the younger generation.
She mentioned that the meeting also seeks to convey and honor the common values that connect the two nations: solidarity, brotherhood, peace, and living together.
At the gathering, Véronique Antomarchi, a historian and professor at the University of Paris Cité, highlighted the significance of these narratives and personal experiences, which are an essential component of Franco-Moroccan history. She pointed out that Moroccan goumiers had a critical impact on various fronts, especially during the 1943 conflicts in Corsica.
From his perspective, filmmaker and photographer Roberto Battistini remembered that Moroccan goumiers and tirailleurs had a crucial role in the Second World War, giving their lives to free Europe from Nazism.
In the meantime, Patrick Barré, former head of the French Office for Veterans and War Victims (ONaCVG) in Morocco, highlighted the significance of this acknowledgment. He mentioned that the organization, located in Casablanca, is dedicated to maintaining the memory of their service and advocating for their rights.
