President Asif Ali Zardari has given his approval for the selection of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as Pakistan’s inaugural Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), even though he remains in his role as Chief of Army Staff, according to the President’s Secretariat.
The five-year term comes after the proposal submitted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was approved by the president.
The president also granted a two-year extension to Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, the Chief of Air Staff, starting from the end of his current term on March 19, 2026. In a statement, the president expressed his warmest regards to both officers, emphasizing their crucial role in enhancing Pakistan’s military leadership and cooperation.
Previously, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif submitted the report to the Presidency, endorsing the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will hold both positions simultaneously.
This position is valid for a duration of five years. He will become the nation’s initial Chief of Defence Forces. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also given approval for a two-year extension to the service of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu. This extension will begin after his existing five-year term ends in March 2026.
