The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stated on Friday that a number of Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon on Thursday occurred within the zone where peacekeepers are deployed, urging Lebanese parties to avoid “any response that might worsen the situation further.”

UNIFIL denounced in a statement the attacks as “explicit breaches of Security Council resolution 1701” and called on the Israeli military to make use of the communication and cooperation channels at their disposal.

“UNIFIL remains responsible for observing and reporting on the conditions in southern Lebanon, and for assisting both Lebanon and Israel in carrying out resolution 1701. Both sides need to follow through on their duties and promises under the resolution and the agreement made in November, in order to protect the advancements that have been made so far,” the statement mentioned.

On Thursday evening, UNIFIL reported that peacekeepers on duty were approached by six individuals riding three motorcycles near Bint Jbeil, with one person discharging about three shots at the rear of the vehicle, stating that “no injuries occurred.”

The declaration criticized the assaults on peacekeepers as “unacceptable and serious breaches of resolution 1701.” It called on the Lebanese government to guarantee the safety and protection of peacekeepers and requested a complete and immediate inquiry to hold those responsible accountable.
