The 23rd Brigade of the Nigerian Army has refuted claims that its personnel killed any women demonstrating against a local conflict in Lamurde Local Government Area.Adamawa State on Sunday.

The unit, based in Yola, has sent staff to Lamurde after increased community conflicts over the weekend.

A report released on Monday, December 8, claimed that soldiers accompanying the commander of the 23rd Brigade opened fire on female demonstrators, resulting in seven deaths.

In a statement released on Tuesday, authored by Captain Olusegun Abidoye, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for Sector 4 Operation Hadin Kai/23 Brigade, the Army described the report as “unfounded and deceptive.”

The declaration stated that the Brigade Commander was not present at the location but was attending a virtual weekly operational meeting with the Chief of Army Staff.

The 23rd Brigade referred to the report as an effort to damage the credibility of the Brigade and the Nigerian Army.

In reference to the reported event, the statement mentioned that soldiers had received an emergency call regarding a group preparing to assault the Lamurde Local Government Secretariat.

As they worked to secure the building, troops came across women protesting by blocking the road.

The unit verified that its members established a small opening to move forward and did not shoot at the women.

“If any woman had been shot, the soldiers would not have been permitted to move through the crowd,” the statement claimed.
