Thailand’s Defence Ministry stated that Cambodia carried out attacks on Thailand on Sunday, aiming to shift global focus away from its unacceptable deployment of landmines on Thai territory.
In a message shared on its Facebook page late Monday, the ministry stated that evidence collected by the Asean Observer Team in Thailand clearly indicated that Cambodia had breached the Ottawa Convention by placing landmines along the border.
As per the Ministry of Defence, the evidence was shared during the 22nd Meeting of State Parties to the Ottawa Convention in Geneva. Cambodia has signed the global agreement that prohibits anti-personnel mines.
As per the ministry, the evidence comprised mapped locations of newly placed mines within Thai territory, physical signs of recent mine deployment, the existence of PMN-2 anti-personnel mines, and patterns that align with Cambodian military tactics. It stated that Cambodia was unable to counter these findings with any proof or logical argument.
The Ministry of Defence stated that the renewed Cambodian attacks were “attempts to move from the realm of facts to the realm of emotions,” a strategy it alleged Cambodia frequently employs when under examination in global meetings.
After the attacks, Cambodia once more blamed Thailand for aggression, presenting itself as a small and defenseless nation facing a more powerful neighbor, while seeking peace and global support, according to the ministry.
“This was designed to generate conflict and shift focus rather than handling the matter appropriately and in accordance with global standards,” the statement mentioned.
