The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s proposal to deploy Nigerian forces to the Republic of Benin in a bid to assist in restoring peace and security following the failed military coup that occurred last weekend.
The support was revealed on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the session, after the Committee of the Whole examined the president’s letter, as specified in Section 5, Part II of the Constitution, according to Channels.
Parliament members approved the initiative without any dissent, officially providing legislative approval for the regional security operation.
Akpabio praised the decision as urgent, emphasizing that instability in any adjacent nation could quickly disrupt the broader area.
“An injury to one is an injury to all,” he said.
He stated that Nigeria is required to support its allies within the Economic Community of West African States structure.
The Senate is set to promptly send its official endorsement to Tinubu.
In his letter to the upper house, Tinubu sought approval for the deployment, emphasizing that Nigeria has a historical obligation to support Benin within the current ECOWAS security framework. He cautioned that the situation demands “urgent external intervention” to avoid further decline.
The failed coup in Benin took place on Sunday, as a group of soldiers calling themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” appeared on national television to announce that they had decided “Mr Patrice Talon is no longer the president of the republic.”
The action was quickly brought under control, with Benin’s loyal armed forces repelling the advance and regaining authority.
“The regular military is reasserting its authority. The city (Cotonou) and the nation are entirely safe. It’s only a matter of time before everything goes back to normal. The recovery process is advancing smoothly,” officials affiliated with Talon stated.
After the unsuccessful acquisition, ECOWAS revealed intentions to send its rapid response unit.
“Following discussions among members of the Mediation and Security Council at the level of Heads of State and Government, the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government has directed the deployment of components of the ECOWAS Standby Force to the Republic of Benin immediately,” the organization said.
The Regional Force will consist of soldiers from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, and the Republic of Ghana.
The Force will back the Government and the Republican Army of Benin in maintaining constitutional order and the territorial unity of the Republic of Benin.
