Thailand and Cambodia, having concluded a peace treaty following a period of armed conflict, renewed fighting after two months, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of locals. Both nations are blaming each other for initiating a pre-emptive strike.
As reported by international media, including Reuters on the 9th, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that day that military actions against Cambodia would persist until Thai sovereignty and territorial boundaries are protected.
Thailand stated that on the 7th, Cambodian forces crossed into its territory and fired upon Thai troops who were carrying out road maintenance, resulting in two injured Thai soldiers. Conversely, Cambodian forces assert that Thai troops initiated the attack.
Thai forces deployed even F-16 fighter jets during their assault on Cambodia. The Thai government stated that, in the exercise of self-defense, they targeted military installations across different parts of Cambodia using F-16 fighter jets, asserting, “The attacks were accurate and did not affect civilians.”
Thailand mentioned that, up to this point, one soldier has lost his life and 18 others have been injured in the ongoing armed conflict. Cambodia reported that six civilians were killed and nine more were injured.
The Thai Education Minister issued shutdown directives for more than 650 schools due to safety concerns after the 7th.
The two nations have been involved in a conflict over their 800-kilometer land boundary for more than 100 years.
Last July, Thailand and Cambodia experienced conflicts along their border, leading to a minimum of 48 fatalities within five days. In reaction, U.S. President Donald Trump urged both nations to stop the hostilities, stating that he would not continue with tariff discussions if the fighting persisted. Eventually, the two countries concluded a ceasefire agreement in October and took actions including the removal of heavy weapons and the clearance of landmines from the border region.
