The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has reported short-term power cuts in multiple areas on Wednesday, December 17.

The power cuts, lasting up to nine hours, would impact residents in areas of Nandi, Nairobi, Embu, Makueni, Machakos, Kisumu, and Mogori.

As per KPLC, the announcement corresponds to Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules, which highlights the necessity of cutting off electricity supply to ‘support maintenance and enhancement of power lines within the network, connect additional customers, or replace power lines when roads are being built.’

“Kindly note the areas designated for power maintenance on Wednesday, December 17. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” KPLC stated.

Which areas will be without power on December 17?

Migori

Region: Macalder, Nyakweri, Muhuru Bay (Between 9am and 5pm)

The entire area of Muhuru Bay Town, Tagache, Bande, Othoch Rakwom, Lwanda, sections of Sori, Osiri Gold Mine, Macalder Center, Okenge, Sibwoche, and Nyakweri.

Embu

Region: Joykim Hospital, Nthokis, Kamiu, Gk Prisons, Tenri Hospital (Between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM)

Riva Fuel Station, Vieznina, Tenri Hospital, Gerish, NCPB, GK Prisons, Kamiu Catholic, Kamiu ACK, GTI Staff Accommodation, sections of Iveche, and Tenri TVET.

Machakos

Region: Sabaki (From 9am to 12pm)

Alpharama, Manipal, Old Mombasa Road, Ramroad, Athi 55, Athi Stores, Sabaki, Great Wall, Kenchic, and Coloho Mall.

Region: Mlolongo (Between 9 am and 5 pm)

Ngwata Phase 3, Mlolongo Weigh Bridge, KPLC Headquarters, Sapphire Business Park, Weighbridge Gardens, and Kathangaita.

Makueni

Area: Mooni River to Nziu (formerly Ex Sultan) (from 8:30 AM to 5 PM)

Meanwhile, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoropartially liquidated his investmentKenya Power generated KSh 37.8 million by selling 3.08 million shares during the six months ending June 2025.

The transaction decreased his ownership in the utility company from 30 million shares in December 2024 to 26.9 million shares by mid-2025.

With Kenya Power’s closing price at KSh 12 on December 4, 2025, the stake increased to KSh 322.8 million, indicating significant returns due to the company’s improved profitability and higher dividend payouts.
