Sri Lanka, December 17 – Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for all persons involved in the killing of an elephant in Seeppukulama, Mihintale to face punishment without any exceptions.

In a social media post, Premadasa labeled the incident—where an elephant was set ablaze in the Ambagaha Wewa region of the Anuradhapura District—as disgusting, abhorrent, and shameful.

He emphasized that the government, Wildlife Department, and civil organizations need to collaborate to stop such inhumane actions.

Premadasa also honored the wildlife veterinarians and staff who cared for the injured elephant, highlighting the importance of the country standing against such brutality.

He demanded immediate legal measures against those responsible to demonstrate that such offenses will not remain without consequences.

Emphasizing his environmental worries, he pointed out the increasing human-elephant clashes in Sri Lanka and underlined the significance of a community-focused initiative to reduce these incidents.

He mentioned that his party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), is dedicated to safeguarding both people and elephants, and called on the government to enhance the Wildlife Department with sufficient funding.

Premadasa also suggested a nationwide consciousness initiative, beginning in schools located in regions vulnerable to human-wildlife clashes, and cautioned that the government’s inability to enforce effective preventive actions demands an immediate national strategy.
