A pilot from a Mexican airline, who was owed unpaid wages, refused to depart, leading to flight cancellations. Officials arrested the captain and are looking into the situation along with the airline.
As reported by AFP and other international media on the 20th, the pilot prevented the flight from leaving by staying in the cockpit of a plane that was set to depart from Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport the day before.
Footage from the video showed the captain informing the passengers, “This aircraft will not leave until the company settles the debt it owes us.”
He introduced himself as a “father of three” and stated that he had not been paid for five months’ worth of salary and travel costs by the company. He continued, “I have been working at this airline for almost three years and have never failed to finish a task,” and expressed his apologies to passengers, saying, “I am truly sorry. You shouldn’t have to go through this.”
Passengers finally left the plane and took other flights. Mexican aviation officials obtained statements from the airline and pilot and initiated an investigation, which involved checking the claims about unpaid wages.
