Hamas announced on Monday that its long-serving spokesperson died after an Israeli attack in August in the conflict-ridden Gaza Strip, marking the first time the Palestinian militant organization has officially recognized the death of one of its high-profile members.

The confirmation arrives several months after Israel announced on August 31 that its military had eliminated the militant organization’s spokesperson, Hudhayfa al-Kahlout, known as “Abu Obeida,” in an air strike in Gaza. Hamas did not specify the manner or timing of his death.

The statement was made as U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are scheduled to meet in Florida on Monday, with Washington aiming to gain new energy for the U.S.-mediated truce in Gaza, which may face challenges as it moves into a more complex second stage.

Abu Obeida was one of the most well-known members of Hamas’s military branch, the Qassam Brigades, since the group took over Gaza in 2007 from the opposing Palestinian faction, Fatah. He frequently made announcements while wearing a mask, particularly during significant conflicts, shaping the aggressive communication style and stance of Hamas toward Israel.

His prominence made him a well-known individual among Palestinians and throughout the region for almost two decades. The Israeli defense forces stated that he played a crucial role in Hamas’ media and propaganda efforts, noting that the attack which resulted in his death was based on Israeli intelligence regarding his location.

Hamas shared a fresh video on the Telegram messaging platform on Monday, showcasing the group’s new spokesperson. He claimed to be the new Abu Obeida and mentioned that he has taken on the nickname. The individual, donning a mask similar to his predecessor, did not reveal his real name.

But he highlighted Hamas’ refusal to disband — although the ceasefire agreement requires Hamas to hand over all its arms under the oversight of international observers.

The spokesman stated, ‘Our people are protecting themselves and will not surrender their arms while the occupation continues.’

The conflict between Israel and Hamas began following a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, during which the fighters are believed to have killed approximately 1,200 individuals — primarily non-combatants — and took about 250 captives.

Following the ceasefire that began on October 10, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that 414 individuals have lost their lives and 1,142 have been injured within the coastal area. The total number of Palestinian fatalities from the conflict stands at a minimum of 71,266.

The ministry, which does not differentiate between fighters and ordinary people in its statistics, is composed of healthcare workers and keeps thorough records that are considered fairly trustworthy by global observers.
