Russiaseems to have launched its so-called ‘unstoppable’ nuclear-armed missiles, possibly making the risk of catastrophic attacks more imminent than ever.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Defense published a video that purported to depict military vehicles at a secret site inBelarus carrying the Oreshnik missile system

State news agency TASS stated that this was the first instance in which the ministry had officially revealed the Oreshnik, as President VladimirPutinhas stated it is impossible to stop, with velocities said to surpass Mach 10.

The Belarusian Ministry of Defense stated that the Oreshnik has a maximum range of approximately 3,100 miles. Reports indicate it may be capable of reachingLondon in ‘eight minutes.’

TASS claimed that the missile would reach an air base in just 11 minutes.Polandand 17 minutes to arriveNATO headquarters in Brussels.

Although the Oreshnik is not a long-range missile capable ofreaching the US mainland, its estimated range places American allies within reach, implying that an attack on them could bring the US directly into the fighting.

The announcement comes At a pivotal moment for Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations. Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to his Florida estate on Sunday and claimed that Kyiv and Moscow were ‘closer than ever’ to reaching a peace agreement.

However, days before, Trump cautioned that the continuous conflict between Russia and Ukraine might escalate into a global war.

Events like these can lead to a third world war,” he stated to reporters on December 11. “If everyone continues acting this way, it could result in a third world war, and we certainly don’t want that to occur.

Andrey Bogodel, the deputy head of the General Staff department at Belarus’s Military Academy, stated to TASS that the deployment of Oreshnik served as a defensive warning to Western nations.

“Currently, any positive action must, naturally, be carried out with fists. Regrettably, the world can no longer be structured in any other manner,” he stated.

In this context, the ‘Oreshnik’ is not a weapon intended to attack, for instance, Britain or Germany, but rather a statement that we will primarily safeguard our peace in this manner. A method that enables us to assert that it is certainly wiser not to meddle with us.

Bogodel stated that Western countries had repeatedlyviolated red lines during Russia’s so-called special military operation in Ukraine.

“Essentially, there are clear boundaries regarding the use of missile systems, including nuclear weapons. After all, recall the missiles they launched against us – SCALP, Storm Shadow, and later ATACMS,” the expert added.

They also deployed drones to target our radiation early warning stations. In addition to strikes on our bombers, and other similar actions. This is all part of an effort to determine how high Russia’s nuclear threshold is.

The missile system was initially deployed on November 21, 2024, during a trial that resulted in an attack on a defense facility in Ukraine.

After being launched, the Oreshnik employs its rocket engines to quickly speed up until it enters the upper atmosphere, at which point its first-stage boosters are jettisoned once the fuel is exhausted, according to Matthew Powell, a Teaching Fellow in Strategic and Air Power Studies at the University of Portsmouth. The Conversation.

The missile’s multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs) are subsequently deployed, moving through space towards their assigned destinations.

At this point, the system is most susceptible to being intercepted, since it is traveling at a slower speed compared to previous stages. Eventually, internal thrusters direct each MIRV to its designated area.

Putin has stated that standard Oreshnik missiles can burn targets at temperatures up to 7,200°F, comparable to the sun’s surface, although the missile can also be equipped with a nuclear payload.

The Oreshnik is believed to measure between 49 and 61 feet in length and has a width of approximately six feet.

Although not yet verified, specialists have indicated that the Oreshnik has a weight ranging from 66,000 to 88,000 pounds.

The system is also reported to include a warhead that can weigh as much as 1.5 tons, roughly 3,300 pounds.

Putin mentioned earlier this month that the Oreshnik missile system would begin active service before the end of the year.

He delivered the remark during a gathering with senior Russian military officials, where he cautioned that Moscow willaim to expand its advantages in Ukraineif Kyiv and its Western allies refuse the Kremlin’s requests during peace negotiations.

Although Trump mentioned a potential peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow might be approaching, he also acknowledged that the US-led talks that have lasted for months could stillcollapse.

Moscow and Kyiv continue to be strongly opposed on critical matters, such as the withdrawal of troops from specific locations in Ukraine and the future of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is among the 10 largest in the world.
