An elderly man in his 70s who was responsible for a deadly accident involving a taxi at Jonggak Station on Seoul Subway Line 1, leading to one fatality and 13 people injured, was taken into custody by authorities on the 3rd. The taxi driver involved showed a positive result for drugs in an initial test.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Department stated that Mr. A, the driver, was taken into custody at 3:15 a.m. on the same day, facing allegations under the Special Act regarding the Management of Traffic Accidents (resulting in death or injury).
Around 6:05 p.m. the day before, Mr. A was operating an electric taxi when he abruptly sped up for an unclear reason, resulting in a collision with a pedestrian crossing signal pole and two other vehicles in succession.
Six pedestrians who were waiting at the crosswalk were struck by the taxi in the accident, including a woman in her 40s who lost her life, resulting in 14 people injured or killed overall.
Mr. A tested positive for morphine, a type of opioid medication used for pain relief, during an initial drug test. The police have asked for a more thorough examination from the National Forensic Service.
