Authorities have requested a bench warrant for a 70-year-old man who was involved in a car accident near Jonggak Station on Seoul Subway Line 1.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Department stated on the 4th that it has sought a bench warrant against taxi driver Mr. A, who is accused of breaching the Special Act on the Handling of Traffic Accidents (resulting in death or injury), the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (dangerous driving leading to death or injury), and the Road Traffic Act (driving under the influence of drugs).

Around 6:05 p.m. on the 2nd, Mr. A was operating an electric taxi near Jonggak Station in Seoul’s Jongno District when he unexpectedly sped up for no apparent reason, resulting in a collision with a pedestrian crossing signal pole and two other vehicles.

Six pedestrians at the crosswalk were hit by a taxi in the accident, leading to 14 injured individuals, among them a woman in her 40s who lost her life.

A initial drug screening for Mr. A found the presence of morphine, a type of opioid medication. Authorities have asked for a comprehensive examination by the National Forensic Service.
