January 16, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan stated on Friday that the conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will persist until the “rebellion” and its backers are eradicated.

During a visit to the Ad Babiker neighborhood, located east of the capital Khartoum, Burhan spoke to worshippers, highlighting that the “Battle of Dignity” is still continuing. He mentioned that the conflict, which started in April 2023, will not end until the RSF and their supporters are overcome.

The leader of the Sovereign Council called on Sudanese citizens during his address in the East Nile area to come together in order to safeguard and defend the nation. He stated that the people of Sudan would not tolerate “injustice or humiliation” and opposed the introduction of outside solutions or values. Burhan also mentioned that the country’s customs and traditions are a boundary that no group will be allowed to undermine.

Diplomatic deadlock

The General’s strict position is in contrast to global calls for a resolution. A “Quad” group, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, has previously suggested a proposal to stop fighting. This initiative focuses on a humanitarian ceasefire as a first step towards a lasting truce and ultimately a shift to civilian governance.

Nevertheless, the Sudanese administration has responded with its own peace plan, which it submitted to the UN Security Council in December. The government’s suggestion proposes a full ceasefire that would be jointly supervised by the United Nations, the African Union, and the Arab League.

A key requirement of the government’s strategy is the coordinated departure of the RSF from all residential and city areas they currently occupy. According to this plan, RSF combatants would need to gather in particular, assigned camps instead of remaining in their present locations.
