January 16, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese authorities confiscated two SAM-7 anti-aircraft missiles of Russian origin on Friday in central Khartoum, which they attributed to equipment left behind by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF maintained authority over significant parts of the capital from April 2023 until the Sudanese military regained control of the city in March 2025. Leftover weapons and explosive devices remain a key concern for security forces tasked with clearing previously occupied areas.

The Security Police General Administration verified in a press release that shoulder-launched, Soviet-made SA-7 (SAM-7) systems and multiple fuses were discovered. These portable air defense systems (MANPADS) employ infrared tracking to locate aircraft and were located concealed on the sixth floor of a structure in the city center.

As per the statement, the seizure occurred due to information obtained by the Prosecution of Crimes Against the State and the Counter-Terrorism Division. A dedicated field team, led by Major General Mahmoud Suleiman Mohamed, head of the Security Police, carried out the operation following the identification of the location.

Police officials stated that the RSF had utilized the location as a key observation post to limit the activities of the Sudanese Armed Forces and their partners throughout the fighting. Authorities have now commenced legal action under the Arms and Ammunition Act.

The finding underscores the persistent security issues in the capital almost a year since the military’s return to the city. Security personnel keep carrying out inspections of tall buildings and previous strategic locations to protect the urban region from leftover advanced weapons.
