The BTS group has once again broken a new record. Their fifth album “ARIRANG” secured the top position on the Billboard 200, the leading U.S. album chart, for three consecutive weeks, marking a first in K-pop history.
As per Billboard’s chart preview article released on the 12th, “ARIRANG” remained at the top of the chart for three straight weeks, overtaking Morgan Wallen’s “I’m The Problem” and Kanye West’s “BULLY.”
This is the first instance where a K-pop artist’s album has remained at the top of the chart for three weeks. Earlier, the original soundtrack (OST) album from the Netflix animated film *KPop Demon Hunters*, which created a worldwide sensation, managed to reach number one for two separate weeks.
The Billboard 200 ranks music albums using album units, which include both physical and digital album sales, as well as streaming activity converted into album sales (SEA) and digital track downloads transformed into album sales (TEA).
“ARIRANG” sold 124,000 album units in the most recent tracking period, marking a 34% drop compared to the prior week. Sales of physical and digital albums totaled 71,000 units, keeping it at number one on the “Top Album Sales” chart for three straight weeks. SEA contributed 50,000 units, while TEA added 3,000 units.
Billboard noted, “Before this, the previous album to remain at number one for three or more weeks was Mumford & Sons’ ‘Babel,’ which held the top spot for five separate weeks in 2012–2013. ‘ARIRANG’ is also the first album since Taylor Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ earlier this year to secure three consecutive weeks at the top right after its launch.”
BTS returned as a full group on the 20th of last month with their fifth album titled “ARIRANG,” which came out after a span of 3 years and 9 months. The latest album embodies the group’s essence, yearning, and profound feelings of love that resonate universally. It features a total of 14 songs, including the lead track ‘Swim’ (SWIM). ‘Swim,’ a song in the alternative pop style, conveys the mindset of persistently moving forward despite life’s challenges. RM, the leader, was responsible for the overall lyrics, incorporating the members’ perspectives.
