April 17, 2026 (ANTALYA, Turkey) – Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem stated on Friday that foreign involvement and the influx of foreign fighters must cease, labeling them as key causes of the country’s conflict and hindrances to achieving peace.

In conversation with the European Union representative for the Horn of Africa, Anita Weber, during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Salem presented the government’s strategy for a full-scale resolution. This approach is grounded in a peace proposal introduced by the Prime Minister to the UN Security Council in December.

The government’s program centers on achieving a ceasefire, safeguarding civilians, and rebuilding state institutions, while highlighting Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial unity. Salem emphasized that tackling the underlying causes of the crisis is crucial for ensuring stability.

The European Union representative stated the union’s dedication to aiding in reducing tensions and attaining a humanitarian ceasefire as a step towards a lasting truce, as reported by the Sudan News Agency. She emphasized the significance of aligning global efforts, such as the Quad framework, which includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt.

During a different meeting, Salem engaged in discussions with Mohamed Abdi Ware, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The conversation focused on regional security threats, particularly the spread of mercenaries and the effects of the Sudanese crisis on the Horn of Africa.

Salem informed the IGAD representative that the government’s main focus is on enhancing the humanitarian conditions and facilitating the distribution of aid. He repeated his calls for what he referred to as “terrorist militias” to leave civilian areas in Darfur and Kordofan, enabling the secure return of residents and the start of a national discussion.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed approval for a suggestion from IGAD to dispatch a high-level team to Khartoum and to temporarily resume its office in the capital. Salem pledged to the regional organization that the government would offer the required resources to guarantee the mission’s effectiveness.

Speaking at a high-level session of the forum named “Investing in Africa’s Future,” Salem pointed out that although Africa is abundant in natural resources, these resources frequently lead to conflict and the exploitation by foreign interests. He used the ongoing war in Sudan as a key example of this situation.
