A prominent presidential candidate from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has urged for a unified opposition coalition as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
During a discussion at the National Opposition Summit in Ibadan on Saturday, the development economist, banker, and public policy expert cautioned that the magnitude and intricacy of Nigeria’s present issues necessitate a unified and collaborative approach that exceeds the capabilities of any single party or individual.
A declaration issued by the media office of the Mohammed Hayatu-Deen Campaign Organization stated that Hayatu-Deen emphasized that solidarity among opposition groups is now essential, rather than optional, in order to offer Nigerians a genuine and workable alternative.
Nigeria stands at a critical juncture,” Hayatu-Deen stated. “The growing instability, the heavy burden of daily expenses, and the gradual shrinking of democratic freedoms require a unified reaction. This isn’t about individual goals; it’s focused on the country’s salvation.
Hayatu-Deen warned that ongoing division among the opposition would only strengthen the existing situation and extend the suffering experienced by millions of Nigerians.
As a result, he called on political leaders to go beyond words and show a true dedication to teamwork, selflessness, and common goals.
During the summit, the former presidential candidate met with prominent opposition figures, such as Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who hosted the event, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s presidential hopeful Peter Obi, and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi.
He also interacted with the summit’s organizers, Professor Jerry Gana from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Kashim Imam, indicating increasing momentum towards opposition unity.
Hayatu-Deen also emphasized that the 2027 elections offer a vital chance to redirect Nigeria’s path, provided that opposition leaders are ready to prioritize the country’s welfare over political and individual interests.
“Nigerians are seeking leadership that is compassionate, brings people together, and has the ability to bring about genuine transformation. This duty lies with all of us in the opposition to unite and meet the challenge,” he added.
Reiterating his dedication to the ADC, Hayatu-Deen promised to collaborate with party officials, relevant parties, and other Nigerian citizens who share his vision to create a wide-ranging alliance aimed at reviving security, stabilizing the economy, and reestablishing confidence in democratic systems.
