The Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority, Ola Awakan, made a notable return visit to his former university, Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), creating a meaningful moment filled with pride, acknowledgment, and future-oriented partnerships.

Dr. Awakan, along with his wife, Mrs. Omolola Ola Awakan, who is also a graduate of the same institution, was warmly welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor, Ayodeji Agboola, and the university’s senior management staff.

Throughout the visit, the NTDA Director-General inspected important enhanced facilities at the university, such as its cutting-edge ICT Centre, which is considered one of the biggest in the nation, emphasizing the institution’s dedication to innovation, development, and academic quality.

The head of the NTDA also toured the Performing Arts Department, where a segment from his play, Echoes of the Drums, was staged in his recognition, bringing a cultural and personal element to the homecoming.

A key feature of the visit was the unveiling of a Smart Tourism Hub, a joint project involving NTDA and the university.

The center will offer digital access to tourist spots throughout Nigeria, acting as a venue for education, creativity, and income creation.

In response to the initiative, the Vice-Chancellor referred to Dr. Awakan as a distinguished representative of the institution and praised his dedication to excellence and ongoing efforts to contribute back.

He also greeted the Smart Tourism Hub as a well-timed and significant advancement.

It’s a wonderful pleasure to have the Director General back on campus after so many years since we graduated. We are happy that he is achieving success and bringing honor to Mr. President.

Currently, a large portion of our population consists of young people. If we continue with our efforts, we can be sure that the future holds promise. Programs such as this help students gain new perspectives and provide them with possibilities that extend past their graduation.

During the visit, Dr. Awakan highlighted the essential part tourism plays in Nigeria’s plan to diversify its economy: “As you are aware, the President has stressed that diversification is the key to advancing the economy. The only sustainable route out of oil dependence is tourism.”

Several nations have restructured their economies via tourism, and in Nigeria’s case, we possess greater potential than we currently recognize.

He also reconfirmed his dedication to contributing to the institution and enhancing cooperation.

We are collaborating with Olabisi Onabanjo University to develop additional programs that go beyond establishing a Smart Tourism Hub on campus. It’s about contributing to an institution that has significantly influenced who I am today.

Dr. Awakan disclosed intentions for the NTDA to work alongside universities and pertinent organizations in creating strong tourism-oriented educational programs, establishing the industry as a feasible catalyst for employment and economic development.

In acknowledgment of his remarkable accomplishments and contributions, the Department of Mass Communication at Olabisi Onabanjo University, where he obtained his degree, presented him with the Great Ambassador Award, honoring his career successes and outstanding embodiment of the university’s values.

The trip serves as an example of the impact of alumni involvement and partnership between institutions in fostering creativity, motivating students, and boosting Nigeria’s tourism industry.
