The NiDCOM has urged Nigerians in South Africa to follow the guidance from the consulate general, cautioning about increasing anti-foreigner protests throughout the nation.
In accordance with an official notice issued by the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg (Ref No: CGJHB/AD/209/VOL I), dated April 22, 2026, protests in East London, Cape Town, Durban, and KwaZulu-Natal have become violent, resulting in looting, destruction of property, and injuries. As per a statement released by the Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, on Friday, intelligence mentioned in the Consulate’s circular indicates that additional demonstrations are planned in the Gauteng Province from April 27 to 29, 2026, as protesters aim to exert pressure on the South African government regarding the presence of foreign nationals. In reaction to this, NiDCOM is urging all Nigerian citizens to avoid any conflict with demonstrators, stay away from protest groups, and keep track of local media for up-to-date safety updates.
Nigerians are also encouraged to always abide by the law. It was additionally recommended that Nigerian business owners should safeguard their establishments by closing on Freedom Day, April 27, and possibly staying closed on April 28 and 29, as foreign-owned businesses tend to be targeted during periods of instability. While fully supporting the stance of the Consul-General, Amb. Ninikanwa O. Okey-Uche, the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg continues to operate completely and is actively working with South African police authorities to ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens. The statement also mentioned that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Onoh, is in discussions with the South African Minister of Foreign Affairs.
