President Lee Jae Myung on the 28th commented on the growing trend of schools canceling field trips and educational outings because of safety issues, saying, “This is taking away students’ important chances to escape accountability,” and instructed necessary actions.
At the 18th Cabinet meeting, which also functioned as the 6th emergency economic review session conducted at Cheong Wa Dae that morning, the president addressed Education Minister Choi Kyo-jin with these words: “One should not throw away the jar out of fear of maggots.”
President Lee stated, “These days, schools rarely plan field trips or educational outings. Are these not included in the curriculum?” He further noted, “Group activities offer valuable learning experiences, and on-site exposure presents important educational opportunities. However, there is a tendency to steer clear of them mainly because of worries about possible safety incidents or the responsibility involved in managing such events.”
He added, “My school years weren’t entirely filled with happy recollections, but my 5th-grade math trip to Gyeongju became a lasting memory, and I gained a lot from that experience. If there are problems with group lessons or activities such as field trips, they need to be addressed. Regarding safety issues, funding can be allocated to enhance the presence of safety staff, or more personnel can be hired if teachers encounter challenges in teaching or managing classes.”
President Lee added, “Citizens may also be asked to assist as volunteer personnel,” and emphasized, “This involves taking away students’ valuable chances to escape accountability. Please give this issue particular consideration.”
