Culture, Sports, and Tourism Minister Chae Hwi-young addressed talks about transferring the Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts) to a different region, saying, “I have never thought about relocating the campus to that area.” Minister Chae shared this information via a social media update on the 2nd.
Minister Chae stated, “The dispute began when certain legislators from a particular area introduced relevant bills. Although we have already mentioned that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has never examined this matter, the discussion persists alongside the local elections.”
He stated, “The matter of moving the campus is definitely not something that should be determined in secret by a small group; it needs to undergo thorough discussion and reach a broad agreement in a transparent setting.” He also sincerely appealed, “I genuinely ask that you do not interpret the different viewpoints as if they were ‘already settled and being enforced.’”
He said, “The impressive accomplishments that K-Arts has achieved so far are a source of great pride for everyone.” “In this moment when K-culture is gaining momentum globally, setting a vision to elevate K-Arts into a top-tier artistic educational institution must be the highest priority.”
Previously, on the 22nd of last month, legislators from the Democratic Party of Korea in the Gwangju area, such as Representatives Jeong Joon-ho and Min Hyung-bae, spearheaded the introduction of the ‘Act on the Establishment and Operation of K-Arts,’ which generated debate. As criticism from current students and graduates became more vocal, K-Arts officially expressed its opposition on the 28th, stating, “The on-site characteristics and network that are fundamental to art education could be undermined.”
